3Q Concrete Background and Experience

3Q Concrete, a ready mix concrete supplier in Southern Africa, have been in business for the last 10 years. 

PPC recently acquired 100% of the shareholding in the company.

3Q Concrete (Pty) Ltd is headed up by Mr Dave Miles of Pronto Holdings.

The core business of the company is the manufacturing and supply of ready mix concrete to the Mining, Construction and General Economic sectors in a Southern African context.

The vision of the company is to become the most admired supplier of concrete in Southern Africa.

3Q Concrete currently have 15 branches/plants with the footprint as follows:

  3. Amandelbult (Limpopo Province)
  4. Boshoek (North West)
  5. Rustenburg (North West)
  6. Brits (North West)
  7. Kathu (Northern Cape)

  9. Rietspruit (Mpumalanga)
  10. Secunda (Mpumalanga)
  11. Komati (Mpumalanga)
  12. Middelburg (Mpumalanga)
  13. Witbank (Mpumalanga)
  14. Tete (Mozambique)

The plant capacity of each of the above plants is 8 000m3 per month based on an average of 60m3 per hour with a 120 000m3 per month total capacity. The plant at Shondoni Mine is a wet batch plant with a capacity of 100m3 per hour.

The expertise and experience developed over the years due to having a wide footprint with a well balanced portfolio is part of the 3Q Mahuma success story. Here follows a summary of some of the projects:

  • Kusile Power Station – Construction of ESKOM Power Station in Mpumalanga. 3Q Mahuma offered an on-site batching solution and successfully supplied concrete to the project for the last 3 years running. The on- site batch plant is backed up from the Balmoral plant. Project Volume – 600 000 m3.

  • Medupi Power Station – Construction of ESKOM Power Station in Limpopo. During the first year of construction 3Q acted as the primary concrete supplier to this project. Project volume 400 000m3.

  • Grootegeluk Expansion Project (GMEP) – Mine Expansion Project in Limpopo adjacent to Medupi.

  • Mine Development Projects – 3Q have been involved in various mine developments or expansion projects, all of which required high spec concrete supply. Styldritf (new mine), Maseve (new mine), Tharisa (new mine), Bakubung (new mine), SASOL Shondoni (new mine), LONMIN (expansion), Anglo (various shaft expansions throughout SA), Impala Platinum (New #16 and #17 shafts as well as various shaft expansions), Coal development in Mpumalanga including BHP Billiton, Exarro, Anglo Coal, Xstrata to name but a few.

  • Water Augmentation Projects – Concrete is supplied to two major water augmentation projects namely the Komati Water Augmentation Project (Mpumalanga) and the Mogol Pipeline (Limpopo).These projects calls for the supply of high spec concrete delivered over long distances.

  • Water Reclamation and Waste Water Treatment Projects – 3Q currently supplies concrete to the Middelburg Water Reclamation Project, Emalahleni Water Reclamation Project, Thabazimbi Waste Water Works, Northam Waste Water Works and in Kathu concrete is supplied for a water treatment plant in an upmarket housing project.

  • SANRAL Projects – 3Q are supplying concrete to various SANRAL projects for bridges, V-drains, culverts and concrete paving such as the N4 Upgrade from Middelburg to Witbank, N4 Upgrade from Rustenburg to Swartruggens and some smaller projects in Mpumalanga and North West.

  • High Profile Projects – such as the BRT projects (Bus Rapid Transport System) currently underway in Rustenburg. This involves the construction of approx. 20 km of concrete roads and the development of a Concentrated Solar Project in Kathu, Northern Cape.

  • Development of Shopping Centres/Retail Centres – Concrete is currently supplied to the development of Moruleng Mall (Mogwase), Shoprite Checkers (Emalahleni), New Regional Shopping centres in Rustenburg as well as Brits, Extension to the Northam Mall, Warehousing in Tete Mozambique.

  • Specialised Projects – 3Q also supplied concrete to various contracts that is highly specialised such as polished concrete floors and ultra- thin concrete roads.

  • Housing Projects – Concrete is currently supplied to various housing projects ranging from the Matlapeng Housing Project in Kathu to various low cost housing projects in North West and Mpumalanga.

  • On Site Batching Solutions – There are three main project underway where 3Q are offering on -site batching solutions. At the Kusile Project, the Maseve mine project and the SASOL Shondoni Mine project.

Apart from all the main projects listed above 3Q also supplies concrete to numerous smaller construction companies, contractors and private individuals on a daily basis.

All of the above operations are supported by a complete Head Office support systems that includes a Quality Assurance Management System and Health and Safety Management System that is South African Ready Mix Association (SARMA) accredited which in turn is ISO 9001 compliant.

3Q Concrete also makes use of the services of a concrete technologist, Jacques Smith from Go Consulting, for the design of all our mixes, ensuring that Quality concrete is consistently manufactured.
